Problems for Rahul in reviving Congress

Silence and impatience

Many in Congress and its supporters think that Rahul has to be decisive and assertive. It may not be correct to come to such conclusions when It is hard to say what Rahul has in his mind. He is outspoken, frank on many issues but not about his strategies for Congress.

The drift may appear to be pilotless or captainless. In reality, Congress remains afloat with silent supporters. It sticks to convention; respects seniors, their contributions; accommodates even if they fail but does not throw them out. Rahul only reflects it.

Congress always opts for smoother and healthier transitions; measures its steps. The process is crucial. It does not mean that they are losing sight of the ends. Rahul, after his resignation, Congress after setbacks have emerged stronger now. Some may disagree with this view.

Rahul is too much of a democrat for our impatience. He allows others their space and freedom of opinions; His leaders listen to him but do not yield their ground. They fight for their group but not for Congress. Their personal interests cloud and overtake the interests of the party.

It is a characteristic feature of Rahul that he listens more. He is caring and looks into others’ discomfort. He does not like to differ unless pushed. He may express his views but does not impose, push, persuade seniors, leaders when they are wrong. He allows them their way.

People are not aware of the intricacies involved. They do get impatient and anxious, more rightly so about their future. Their perception is based on the reports in the media. They tend to blame the leaders, especially when leaders like Rahul do not defend themselves.

Rahul has plans, needs time

Some leaders may feel distanced from Rahul. For top leaders, the space for discussions and time is limited. More so, when seniors do not want to yield but remain silent, holding on to their stand. Mutual understanding can happen when interactions are open-minded and complete.

If some leaders talk to Rahul as part of his support system or official duty, they are criticised and scrutinised for their merits as advisers. Rahul has a mind of his own. Probably he does not even open out fully to Sonia or Priyanka. It does happen with a family.

He had not coaxed Priyanka when she declined to plunge into politics full-time. He has allowed Priyanka when she persuades leaders. We are not robots to function in the same way. Opinions, perceptions vary widely. Naturally, conversations & discussions are absolutely needed.

Rahul is not in an enviable position. He has to make Congress a viable, energetic and vibrant organisation. Everyone has a grievance. Everywhere there is dissent. He has to overcome the lethargy, group culture to establish connectivity with the masses, communicate with all.

If Congress takes one corrective step to bring order, there will be a hundred dissenting voices, open or subdued. Even if decisions are implemented after discussions, they will only blame Rahul. He is a soft target. For everything, he will be indicted by the courts of Jesters.

Beyond all those character assassinations, insults and doubts expressed against him, Rahul is least perturbed. He knows they are misplaced, misconstrued or plainly mischievous. Rahul is also aware of his ability and responsibility. He needs the understanding and cooperation of all.

Rahul talks about drastic changes required as Congress has drifted away from what it was. It appears, he has applied his mind to the issue and may have plans. Others have to create an environment conducive to such drastic changes. Responsibility does not end with Rahul.
