Course corrections for Congress-Part Ⅱ

Let leaders emerge

Some principled, caring, noble leaders are needed from time to time to steer the country and guide its people. The perception of some ‘power’ soaked politicians being the ‘right person’ may not be right. They may push people and the country into a paralysis.

Lies are being spread that Rahul is not serious or incapable to take up UPA leadership. It is a deliberate spin by some opposition leaders to weaken Congress; to usurp coalition leadership. They will only destroy the opposition and the country repeating their errors of 2014 and 2019.

If all the vicious and malicious campaign against him has not least affected Rahul, it is foolish to imagine that leaders with no roots are going to challenge him from within. He has absolute clarity of mind; respects his seniors; expects to earn their trust; awaits his time.

Unfortunately, we are always in a hurry and impatient. Our politicians try to impose leaders of their choice and convenience on the country and its people leaving them no choice but to go for this trial and error. It is politicians’ Dadagiri or autocracy, not people’s democracy.

Let the leaders emerge in a democratic way earning the trust of the people. Let us not allow the selection of ‘kings’ garlanded by ‘political elephants’ expecting princely ‘powers and purses’. Nehru and Indira were popular but elected by mandate of people, not by manipulations.

Whether it is Gandhiji or ‘Dhoniji’ they insisted on adopting the right process. Do not go by names behind but only by truth and sense. If opposition parties do not rectify their failures and impose unworthy persons or policies then they are going to fail in the same way as Modi.

It is not that the American system and democracy is foolproof. Their system and also the economy is strong enough that they could withstand and overcome the effect of eccentric leaders like Trump. When issues defy logic and sense they become bipartisan to shift positions not parties.

Unfortunately, we are not yet a mature democracy and economically strong enough to withstand crazy and cranky men like Modi. The weaknesses of the system and people are fully exploited by Modi/ Shah/ RSS and their wings. Power-hungry politicians from the opposition are aiding them.

Leaders should inoculate themselves from the ‘pandemic virus’ spread by Modi/ BJP/ RSS. They should isolate themselves by not having any contact or deal with them; get together to eradicate that virus, to reestablish democratic rule and strengthen it in every way possible.

Let new leaders bloom at all levels. The old unhealthy skin should peel out. The new generation should be allowed to grow with confidence and energy to handle and solve issues. The maturity level they display, the comradery, fraternity they show are far better than oldies.

Congress wait is over

The diffidence, hurt, impatience reveals itself in abundance in expectations, reactions of all opposed to Modi/ BJP. It is a reflection of their inability, frailty to counter Modi, his total lies and failures. It may change if the opposition unites on issues, Modi has gifted them.

Farmers issue is one. If and when farmers agitation succeeds it is purely due to extreme arrogance, idiocy, the obduracy of Modi & Co and the sagacity, awareness of farmers about inbuilt dangers the bills pose for their property and prosperity. Opposition cannot claim the credit.

But they have unlimited numbers of Modi’s failings and misadventures. They can use all issues including that of farmers if they decide to unite. If the present trend continues the opposition parties will definitely fritter away their energies and they will not unite to fight.

They should know that it is too early to count their eggs as the dangers to democracy posed by Modi/ Shah/ RSS does not end with farmers’ issue. They have a long list on their agenda. Every opposition leader with few MPs thinks he/ she can dictate terms to others to become PM.

Instead, they should strengthen themselves individually and collectively not at the expense of each other but to expose Modi/ BJP and root out their regimes from states/ centre. The opposition leaders should forego their hyperboles, inflated egos to talk truth, sense and reality.

As of now, it is only a theoretical possibility of opposition unity against devious, dangerous designs of Modi. But the truth has to be told as it exists about the extent of damage and devastation, the failures of opposition parties again will cause to our people and country.

Congress wait should be over. They should now take the lead deploying all their weight and might to strengthen their party in all areas. They should move aggressively activating existing cadres, mobilising new members and supporters energising them with constant interactions.

They should reason with everyone, all leaders, opposition parties who are responsive to unite and fight, speaking truth and sense. Congress leaders should shed their egos and move ahead showing warmth, cordiality, frankness for consolidation of views and unity among the opposition.
